How to Alter Footed Pajamas for a Doll

Our Heather Hardin and Rose Hopkins dolls from The Magic Attic
collections by Tonner, model their footed Christmas pajamas under the tree.

This particular altering project is not for the inexperienced sewer. I will only recommend the process to teens or moms. It seems a bit more complicated than it actually is but being familiar with sewing and fitting patterns will help you to accomplish it with greater satisfaction. I used 0-3 months sizes when altering the pajamas for our Magic Attic Dolls. The smaller the original baby cloths, the more professional your end project will look. Preemie sizes are even better!

General Guide Lines for Alterations:

  1. Both the zippers and snaps may be used from the original pajamas. Cut at the arrows shown above on the left, leaving the closures intact.
  2. Remove the sleeves at the seams.
  3. Cut away the feet leaving 1/2" of fabric above the feet.
  4. Cut an inverted V shape on the crotch areas to eliminate excess material. Don't sew the crotch insert from the original pajamas back into the dolly version of the sam pajamas.
  5. Make sure to center the applique design above the place where you will recut the crotch and leggings as best as possible. The zippers end will be caught up in the new seam of the crotch. You should have five remaining pieces to work with after cutting. Cut away several inches of excess material from both outer sides of the footed pajamas to fit the doll you're working with. See pictures below.
  6. Turn the pajamas inside-out and sew the sleeves back in place, sew up the side seams and reattach the booties by hand.

Above you can see that the reindeer applique is left intact on the footed pajamas. If you alter smaller baby pajamas sizes, the figures and prints will be proportionally more accurate to the size of your dolls. These elements may not be perfect but the results will be more pleasing than something in a toddler size for certain.
