DIY Cotton Batting Carrots With Feather Tops

Our Easter desert table is decorated with: a bold green leafed kerchief,
cotton batting carrots inside a charming wooden wheelbarrow,
a tiny palm woven donkey, doll porcelain dishes and a faux carrot sheet cake.
You can make your own set of cotton batting carrots to decorate your doll's Easter buffet, desert table, or mantle.
They are very easy to make and would also look just as nice hanging from a life size egg tree!

Supply List:
  • white cotton balls
  • toothpicks
  • green feathers
  • orange and red acrylic paints
  • orange thread
  • white school glue
Step-by-Step Directions:
  1. Use your white glue to adhere a few green feathers to the tips of several toothpicks. Set these aside to let them dry over night.
  2. Unravel several white cotton balls.
  3. With a generous amount of white glue cover the toothpicks from tip to feathered end.
  4. Now twist the cotton batting around the toothpicks, tapering the cotton at the end of each toothpick. Build up more cotton batting at the end with the feathers.
  5. Let the cotton carrots dry overnight, then paint them with thinned down acrylics in water the following day.
  6. Wrap a bit of orange thread around your carrots for more color and texture.
Left, are the carrots before painting. You can see that the top end is thicker than the bottom.
Right, the carrots have been painted  and wrapped again with orange thread.
Left, are two smaller carrots. I used different lengths of toothpicks to add interest.
Center, a carrot sheet cake topped with a faux icing carrot.
Right, our doll's Easter desert table has been set and is ready for the holiday.
