"Masako" A Doll from Japan

Close-up of Masako Asian Avon doll.
The printing on the side of the box she comes in reads:

"Attired in a traditional Japanese kimono, Masako is one in a series of collectible porcelain dolls from around the world.

Japan, known to her people as Nippon (source of the sun), is a reflection of ancient customs and history harmonizing with modern technology and life. Located in the North Pacific Ocean, Japan is composed of four large islands encircled by thousands of smaller ones.

Little is known about Japan's origin. Historians note that the islands were inhabited as early as 4500 B. C. Japan was greatly influenced by neighboring China. Art, language and religion were rapidly absorbed. Japan closed her doors to the outside world during the early 1600's and did not open them for over 200 years. This was a time for the Japanese to purify their culture.

This wonderful nation has a long and rich heritage. Novelists such as Murasaki Shikibu and Yasunari Kawabata contributed greatly to literature. Art flourished under Harunobu and Utamaro. The Japanese always strived to achieve harmony and beauty in everything they did. This theme remains strong even today."

Our little Masako (9") from Japan by Avon has had her costume altered.
