How to shape an easy rope basket for Easter...

The finished cord or "rope" basket
with bunny and eggs.
The thickness of this basket's walls and handle is entirely dependent upon the thickness of the rope that you choose to wrap with scrap fabrics. Our Easter basket on the right, measures 2"x 3 1/2'' minus the basket handle. This craft is for older children or adults only because of the hot glue that is used in the making of it. The wrapping of the rope may be done by a younger child so that two people might craft side by side.

Supply List:

  • thick, heavy cording
  • scrap fabric
  • needle and thread
  • hot glue gun and hot glue
  • white school glue
  • scrap cardboard
  • a decorative thinner twine
Step-by-Step Instructions:
  1. I started with approximately 5-6 ft. of rope for this small basket and wrapped it around itself on top of a circle cut from a scrap of cardboard 3 1/2 in diameter.
  2. Before you begin the process of gluing down the cord on top of itself, you will need to wrap it in scrap material. Cut these scrapes in half inch lengths before twisting them around the rope to cover it completely.
  3. You may need to thread a needle and sew down the beginning pieces directly to the rope as you go. This step will keep your work neat and tidy.
  4. Then cover the cut cardboard bottom with the same fabric with a bit of white school glue to hold it in place.
  5. Now with the covered face of cardboard facing out, glue down, using hot glue the first row of covered rope to the base.
  6. Slowly glue and add next layer of rope until the basket is the height you desire.
  7. Cut off the end and wrap a bit of fabric around it with glue.
  8. If there is any cardboard or glue showing at the bottom that you don't like cover this with additional glue and decorative twine.
  9. Cut the handle piece and glue each end to opposite sides of the basket. Hold it in place where it is glued until the hot glue sets.
  10. Stuff the basket with Easter grass, a porcelain bunny and Easter eggs if you like.
