Madam Swan's a graceful lady,
Likes to float where banks are shady:
When Father Swan goes out to swim
He takes the cygnets out with him.

A RIDE ON A SWAN'S BACK
Once the river Tyne was so much swollen that it overflowed its banks and did much damage in the valley through which it flows to the North Sea. Buildings were washed down, and all kinds of articles were carried away by the flood. Stacks of hay and corn, pieces of furniture, and even animals out of the fields, were borne along by the current. A Swan was seen sailing along for a considerable distance, and the people on the bank noticed that a black spot appeared on its snow-white feathers. As the bird came nearer, everyone was astonished to see that a black object was a live rat, which had taken refuge on the back of the Swan.
The spectators cheered the wise quadruped and also the friendly biped as they both reached the land in safety, and the rat ran off to find a new home. Henry Altemus Company.
