Buttercup

THIRSTY little Buttercup
Caught the dew and drank it up,
Said cool water was so good,
She did n’t seem to care for food.

Assemble a mini doll sized book: Right, is the Buttercup's illustration and verse. Visitors can collect all the flower illustrations and verse from "Flower Children" to print and construct a small book of verse for their dolls. Simply drag each png. into a Word Document, print, cut out all of the images the same size and staple the pages together at the left edge. Squeeze out some white school glue along the stapled edge of the pages and attach a cardboard cover.

The scientific name for Buttercup is Ranunculus. Read more about these here.

Sample buttercup paper chain or border for a bulletin board.

Template of Buttercup

Download and print out the pattern above. The dotted lines indicate where the image will be folded to continue the primrose silhouette seamlessly after it is unfolded. The number of images "linked" together in one continuous chain is determined by the length of the paper being cut. Use a very thin paper to make your cutting easier. Cut away the areas indicated by the design. (see image above and read text on the pattern below. This paper-cut may be used as a border around an Spring bulletin board in a classroom or as a paper chain for a shelf if you like.

Discontent. by Sarah O. Jewett.

DOWN in a field one day in June,
The flowers all bloomed together
Save one, who tried to hide herself
And drooped, that pleasant weather

A robin who had flown too high,
And felt a little lazy,
Was resting near this buttercup
Who wished she were a daisy.

For daisies grow so trig and tall;
She always had a passion
For wearing frills around her neck
In just the daisies' fashion.

And buttercups must always be
The same old tiresome color,
While daisies dress in gold and white,
Although their gold is duller.

"Dear robin," said this sad young flower,
"Perhaps you'd not mind trying
To find a nice white frill for me
Some day, when you are flying?"

"You silly thing!” the robin said,
"I think you must be crazy,
I'd rather be my honest self
Than any made-up daisy.

“You're nicer in your own bright gown
The little children love you;
Be the best buttercup you can,
And think no flower above you.

"Though swallows leave me out of sight,
We'd better keep our places.
Perhaps the world would all go wrong
With one too many daisies.

" Look bravely up into the sky
And be content with knowing
That God wished for a buttercup
Just here, where you are growing."

Here is a little "Buttercup" paper doll
for children to color. Color her flower
petal dress with green and yellow crayons.
Paste on soft yarn "hair" and color
her skin to  match your own of that
of a special friend, if you like
