Carpenter Rebus

        Children will enjoy helping their parents and/or teacher read about carpenters aloud. They can read the tiny pictures while listening and watching a parent read the words aloud in between.

The Carpenter
by Maude M. Grant

Upon the hill the tall trees stood,
With an axe men chopped them down.
The logs were take on a raft
To the saw-mill in the town.

There buzzed the big saw blades all day long;
The cut the logs so round.
And soon a pile of neat, smooth planks,
Out in the yard were found.

The carpenter came with his ruler
And measured round about;
And then the best and smoothest planks
With great care he picked out.

With saw and hammer then he went
Most busily to work;
He pounded nails and used his plane
The good man was no shirk

And soon the little house was done,
Complete in every way,
Windows, shutters and door, even a gate in front,
All neatly painted gray.
