Learning in an adult world with recognition of the potential and already existing interests of children, this increased use of the radio and newspapers has taken on new significance. After all, children do not live in a world separate from adults; on the contrary, they are responding to the adult-made world and much of its appeal for them lies in the interests which they see adults pursuing. Parents and teachers who attempt to screen out reading and listening materials from children's lives, thinking they are too adult for them, may be stunting or dulling wholesome growth.
In a situation in which children and adults read for common purposes, children do not need to be urged to improve their reading skill. They want to read well and make an effort because of the deep satisfaction which they derive from such cooperative ventures.
