| Make a felt needle case for your sewing basket or box in the shape of a heart or butterfly. |
This vintage needle case craft is for anyone who sews enough to know the difference in needles, and wishes to have each type in its place. Keep this case tucked inside of a sewing basket, box or cabinet.
You can make the double heart or the butterfly, or you can read these directions and design your own case. The fundamental working steps are illustrated in the pictures just left. Cut two thin cardboards heart-shaped. Cut four pieces of material a seam wider around the heart. Turn and baste the edges under. Embroider the surface of one piece. Then fit two pieces over a cardboard and blanket-stitch them to the cardboard. Make both of these hearts. Cut three or four hearts a trifle smaller of flannel. Sew them to the bottom heart in two places at the top. Sew three ribbons to each heart, two at the top and one at the bottom. Tie the hearts together.
For the butterfly case, cut the butterfly of thin felt or flannel and embroider it with silk floss until your heart is content. Cut the same size for the bottom. Cut several pieces of butterfly-shaped pieces of flannel for the middle pages. Sew all the parts together through the center to form a book-fashion needle case.
