Popsicle Stick Patio Furniture for Dolls

Determining the number of sticks and the lengths cut for assembly really depends upon the size of
your dollhouse and your doll figures. These can vary by quite a bit, so I've elected not to list these.
It is easier I think for you just to see how the pieces are attached and to make adjustments as you go.

It's easy to cut, glue and assemble Popsicle stick furniture for the patio of a miniature doll house. You need only to collect a few basic supplies to begin.

  • a large selection of clean Popsicle sticks or tongue depressors
  • wood glue
  • a ruler
  • a pencil and eraser for marking measurements as you work
  • a sharp pair of utility sheers and perhaps a bow saw (optional)
  • rough and smooth sand papers
  • acrylic paint, your color preference
A cushion cut from a small piece of foam and covered with a simple pillow-like casing may be used
to add more detail to this set of couch and chairs. I kept my versions simply painted for casual play.

Secondly, it's very important to have patience while cutting, gluing and assembling this type of doll furniture. Wait for pieces to dry between glue applications and do not use too much glue or the wooden craft sticks will warp out of shape!

The tricky part of gluing these two chairs is in the gluing of the arm rests. This is because there
is very little surface area for glue to adhere to when sticking the arm rests against the seat and
chair back. Save this step for last or leave it off altogether if you are working with a very young
 child to make this craft.

Do not try to glue edges of the craft sticks to other surfaces only. Always cut back support pieces to reinforce your designs. Although miniature dolls are very light weight and need only furniture that is delicate to sit on, these furnishings still need to be able to withstand a certain amount of rough play from children; so make this furniture sturdy!

Here you can see that I cut an oval shape from the craft sticks. This is perhaps the most difficult
process to accomplish out of all the designs. Glue the sticks together, side-by-side, reinforce the
back with one brace down the middle. Then trace around a cardboard oval temple on top of the
table and cut with sharp shears. Sand down the edges and paint.

The Popsicle furniture shown here may be copied. This is why I have also photographed the underside of each furniture item so that you can see how each piece is put together.

A picnic table makes a nice addition to the dollhouse lawn if you have one.

I used acrylic paints to finish my dollhouse patio furnishings. Do not water down the paints to cover the craft sticks. Dry brushing pieces like these will help prevent the thin layers of wood from warping. Also drying these miniature tables and chairs in a warm environment or direct sunlight will also help to prevent warping and twisting of the thin wood as you craft.
