Finished versions of cut, sponge cake for our 18" doll's party. |
This doll cake craft is an old favorite among children. It has been on the web for at least eight or nine years. Our version include cotton ball icing and multiple colors of kitchen sponge. We made both: Lemon/Lime slices of doll cake and Blueberry/Strawberry slices of doll cake.
Supply List:
- colorful kitchen sponges from the dollar store
- white cotton balls (one, maybe two)
- white school glue
- decorative scrapbook paper
- thin cardboard (from recycled cereal box)
- glitter and seed beads
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Cut the kitchen sponges in small wedge shapes. These can be any size you wish to make them in proportion to your doll's cake.
- Unravel the cotton balls to make the icing.
- Apply generous amounts of glue the the surfaces where your cake needs icing: between the sponge slices, on the backside of the cake slices ( Which would be the top of the cake, after it has been sliced.) and off to one side of the cake slice. (Which would be the outer side of a circular cake after slicing.)
- Cut a circular plate for the slices of cake from the then cardboard.
- Trace around the cardboard circles on top of decorative scrapbook papers. you will need both a top and bottom cut circle to cover the doll sized plates. Choose the prettiest cut circle for the top side, because this is the one that will show.
- Glue the papers to the cardboard plates.
- Glue the slices of cake onto the covered cardboard, doll plates.
- Now glue on glitter and seed beads along the outside side edge and/or across the back if you prefer.
- You may wish to cut a long, thin strip of decorative paper to cover the edge of the plate too.
- Now your dolls are ready to sit down and eat some lovely slices of cake to celebrate" a holiday, a birthday or just to have a special treat on any old day!
