| This small hardware crafted for our 18 inch doll garage: one brush, two rollers and a paint tray. Quarter is the size indicator in this case. |
To make the old-fashioned paint brush you will need scrap cardboard, real bristles from an old paintbrush, white glue, hot glue, acrylic paint, Mod Podge, brown paper bag and a permanent marker.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Draw and cut-out a small handle for the paint brush twice using the scrap cardboard. Be sure to compare it with the doll's hand so that it will look like the right size to fit easily in the hand of the doll.
- Cut clean bristles from an unwanted paint brush and hot glue these to one side of the cardboard handle. Evenly space the bristles along the top edge of the paint brush.
- Next, squeeze out additional hot glue along the bristles overlapping onto the inside of the handle and firmly press the second cardboard handle on top of the first, trapping the bristles between them.
- Use masking tape around the outside of the handle to apply pressure and seal the edges of the cardboard handle.
- With white glue apply a layer of brown paper bag around the outside of the handle. Let dry.
- Paint the handle with several brown colors of acrylic.
- Draw grain of wood using a permanent black ink marker, then apply Mod Podge.
- Cut the bristles across the top of the paint brush to even these out.
To make the paint rollers used to spread wall paint evenly across large surfaces collect together: a scrap sheet of cotton batting, a thin hollow tube with heavy wire attached (former hanger), acrylic paint, masking tape, plastic bag, Scotch brand clear tape and Mod Podge.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Score the cardboard on the inside of the recycled hanger the length you would like your paint roller to be extended out from the sturdy wire handle.
- Using a pair of jeweler's pliers bend and cut the wire into the shape of the handle shown above int the photo reference.
- Wrap the wire handle with masking tape to make the handle and also cover the cut ends so that these will not be too sharp for pretend play.
- Paint the handle and also wrap with more paper to represent the 'rubber grip' of each handle.
- Mod Podge the painted surface.
- Wrap the cardboard tube with white glue and cotton batting sheet to form the soft roller.
- Cut out a small amount of plastic to wrap the roller using Scotch tape to hold this wrapping in place. This will make your roller look like one that is clean in the package and has yet to be used.
To craft a paint tray with raised ridges across the bottom, you will need: small piece of corrugated cardboard, silver paint, white glue, masking tape and Mod Podge.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Cut the corrugated cardboard the length and width you desire for the paint tray. I measured this to fit the rollers described above.
- Carefully tear away the outside paper from the corrugated cardboard cut-out on the top only. This will reveal the bumpy layer of paper within.
- Now glue this piece of cardboard to a bottom piece of cardboard the same width, but more than double it's length. The lower piece of cardboard should be folded into the 'wedge' shape and secured with masking tape.
- Also shape cardboard walls to extend slightly above the edges of the bottom of the tray and glue these firmly in place.
- Use masking tape to cover the outside surfaces if needed.
- Paint the entire tray using silver acrylic paints. Let dry.
- Bruch on Mod Podge to seal.
