Supply List: thin kitchen foil, masking tape, newsprint or newspaper, hot glue gun and hot glue, clay paper mache pulp, acrylic paints, thin cardboard, and Mod Podge to seal.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Wad newsprint into the shape and size you wish your Jack-o-lantern to be and hold this together with a bit of masking tape.
- Add a final layer of tin foil at the end; use on one sheets worth on the final layer. The kitchen foil will not stick to the inner crushed ball shape during the drying process and this it why I use it.
- Mix together the paper clay mache pulp according to the directions on the outside package. Do not make more than a 1/3 cup at a time as the pulp is expensive and you may not need so very much of it for this particular craft.
- Use a permanent ink pen to draw the Jack-o-lantern's face on the outside of the foil.
- Now press on a thin layer of pulp all over the newsprint/foil form excluding the inside of the shapes where his face will be left open. This mimics the carving of his features.
- Let the paper clay pulp dry over night.
- In the morning sculpt on the 'ridges' of the pumpkin, even if the mache is not completely dried out.
- Set aside the little Halloween Jack-o-lantern to dry completely in a warm dry place.
- Once the pumpkin head has hardened, carefully pull out the newsprint. Leave the foil behind if it sticks. The interior of the Jack-o-lantern may feel less dry. If it does, leave the pumpkin head to dry all the way before painting it.
- Paint the pumpkin using quick drying acrylic paints. Layer on several shades of orange on the outside of this little fellow. Paint it's interior black or yellow.
- Hot glue this pumpkin to a cardboard 'plate' cut and decoupaged with a decorative Halloween paper.
- Leave enough room off to the side for the guacamole dip and chips to be positioned as though your Jack-o-lantern is spitting-up something 'spooky!'
- The guacamole is made with the same paper pulp as the Jack-o-lantern head. Just mash up a small amount of prepared paper clay both inside and out of it's gaping mouth. Let this dry overnight before painting it green.
- To make the chips, cut small doll-sized triangle chip shapes from cardboard and then paint the tiny chips yellowish tan.
- Glue the chips to the plate around the guacamole and serve up the spooking snack to all of your doll's visitors for a Halloween party.
