Appliances From The 1950s

        These magazine ads reflect the modern culture and appliances of the 1950s in Europe. What do you think young people and housewives expected to do during their leisure time at home? Are those expectations much different from today? How has entertainment changed since then and what is it like compared to entertainment in your home today?

Magazine advertisement for Philips televisions, radios, car stereos and record players from 1958. text reads, "Trust Dad always to get the best."

H. M. V. Nipper's "45" all transistor portable player (record player), plays all your favorite 45's. Text reads, "any place you can play - it can play too, because it needs no power! Young teen girl listens and relaxes next to her record player while daydreaming.

       The new mantel radio by EKCO, the "Gondola" in subtle, singing Mediterranean colors. The text reads..."Insprired by sweeping lines of Venetian gondolas...to give your home the decorator touch." A housewife poses with a rèmo wearing a hat somewhat reminiscent of a bareteri.

       The 1955 "Simply marvellous...marvellously simple... Crosley refrigerator." This model claims to put an end to messy defrosting forever! Sold by Shelvador in Australia.

       And last, but not least, read in bed with seven available lamp designs by Duperite from 1951. All reading lamp models come in: white, bubble-gum pink and mint green.
