How to sculpt Bibb lettuce using masking tape...

Left is the three step sculpting process using masking tape.
Right, are the finished, miniature bib lettuces.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is an annual plant of the daisy family, Asteraceae. It is most often grown as a leaf vegetable, but sometimes for its stem and seeds. Lettuce is most often used for salads, although it is also seen in other kinds of food, such as soups, sandwiches and wraps; it can also be grilled. Read more...

Supply List:

  • masking tape
  • aluminum foil
  • Mod Podge
  • white school glue
  • acrylic paints

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Roll a 1" ball of aluminum foil to shape the center head of your lettuce.
  2. Cover this with masking tape.
  3. Shape the outer leaf petals by gathering short sections of masking tape at one end using the sticky side of the tape to hold the tucks and pleats. This is a random, abstract shaping. The small puckers make the petals look natural.
  4. Stick the petals around the central head staggering the placement of petals until you are satisfied with the effect.
  5. Reinforce the lettuce petals with white glue or hot glue if you prefer.
  6. Paint the Bibb lettuce using at least three variations of green.
  7. Cover the finished lettuce heads with Mod Podge.
