The front and back of an accordion, fanfold, folk art paper doll. I've made mine using origami paper, but you can use any kind of paper you have in your stash for this craft. |
The supplies needed for this simple craft include: two sheets of origami paper, scrap paper for the face and hair, a small ribbon and button for trim, colored pencils, a toothpick and glue, your choice.
Left, origami paper. Center, the skirt is an accordion folded fan. Right, see the fanfold before the sleeves were folded in half and applied to the doll's skirt. |
To make this easy little fanfold paper doll, fold two sheets of origami papers front to back in an accordion fold pattern, (see photos). One of these sheets should be cut slightly shorter on two sides only. This shorter sheet will be the sleeves of your doll, the longer 6"x6" will be her skirt.
Fold the larger square for the skirt in half after shaping it and glue down the length of the sides pressing these together firmly until this seam dries.
Then fold the shorter sheet of origami in half and apply a tiny bit of glue at this seam inside every ditch. Glue the outer edge of the sleeves to the top of this doll's skirt.
Use the sharp tip of a small pair of scissors to gently poke a hole for he toothpick at the top of the folded and attached sleeves. This is the neck of the doll.
Cut several round shaped head pieces, one for the front and another for the back. Make the backside of this doll's head the color of her hair and the front side, the color of her face. Glue the toothpick between the circular head papers. I attached this part of my fanfold paper doll's head using hot glue to hold it firmly in place.
Now color the features of your doll's face and apply trims with glue. I gave this little paper doll a ruffled hair cut in back and featured a curvy design for her hair just above her eyebrows. More layers of hair and trims give the doll added strength.
