We have several soft doll, flip books in our family doll collection. The text for dolls like the one photographed below, is usually printed on the 'apron' that can be flipped up to read the doll's story. On the backside of every page is the portrait of the character in the story line arranged so that when the character is either talking or being written about, the reader can see their portrait where the head would be on the doll figure. Our first example below is of the story, "Little Red Riding Hood."
The book 'cover' of this flip doll is of Little Red Riding Hood. |
The first page on the front of the doll reads - "There was once this wonderful little girl called Little Red Riding Hood. She always wore a bright red hood. One day her mother asked her to take a cake to her grandmother who lived in a cottage in the deep dark forest."
Left, the first page from this soft fairy tale book is of Little Red Riding Hood. (see a Dolly Kins Red Riding Hood Here) Right, the second page, is of the Wicked Wolf! |
The second page then says - "When she arrived with the cake she found that a mean, terrible wolf had swallowed poor grandmother whole. He even had put on all of grandmother's favorite clothes. He was wearing her night hat and apron. What a sight."
Left, the third page flipped up is of the Woodsman. Right, the fourth and last page of the doll's apron flipped up is of Red Riding Hood's grandmother. |
On the third page is "Little Red Riding Hood shouted for help and a fine woodsman came to answer her crys. With one whack of his axe he killed the wicked wolf and set grandmother free. She was delighted!
And then the fourth and last fabric page says, "Grandmother put her favorite night hat and apron back on again. Little Red Riding Hood, grandmother and the woodsman ate the cake and were happy for a long, long, long time. The End." 1978 Reliance Products Corp. Woonsocket, R.I.
