Star of David appliqued on our doll's Hanukkah table linens. |
About 165 years before the Christian era the ruler of that part of the world which included Judea sought to impose idolatry upon the Jews. The latter resisted the plan of the Syrian-Grecian ruler, Antiochus by name, and the result was a three-year war, history's first struggle for religious freedom. Despite overwhelming odds the Judeans were successful and joyously engaged in the re-dedication (Chanukah) of their Temple which the pagans had desecrated.
The struggle is commemorated annually by Jews for eight days, kindling candles, singing songs, exchanging gifts, offering prayers of thanksgiving, and rededicating themselves to the cause of religious liberty in their Chanukah celebrations.
Traditionally a minor holiday, Chanukah has gained in popularity and observance in recent years. Indeed, it receives more attention in homes and religious schools than many a holiday traditionally deemed more sacred." Rabbi Applebaum
Supply List for Table Runner:
- blue and white patterned fabric scraps
- thread to match - white and blue
- and red thread for basting stitches
- Star of David pattern below
Step-by-Step Directions:
- Drag the pattern below into Word to enlarge or shrink the template pattern for the Star of David. You can make a table runner like ours for any 18" doll if you'd like.
- I chose to use a silk print with many shades of blue/knot design for my table runner's background print. Cut a 5"x22" from blue print fabric for the top of the table runner and the same size in white for the backside of the runner.
- Our Stars of David measure approx. 3" across from point to point in the sample shown above and below. But you can choose to make your doll's table runner in any size you wish.
- Cut out the star pattern and trace around it on top of a piece of cardboard. Then trace around this template using a soft led pencil on the wrong side of your white fabric.
- Add a 1/4" seam allowance if you applique the star using satin. Omit the seam allowance if you decide to make a similar table runner from felt.
- Clip the inside corners to turn the seam allowance under using a hot iron. You may need adult supervision for this part!
- Pin the stars down to the print wherever you would like these to be.
- Then use a red threaded needle to baste the stars in place with long straight stitches.
- Now use either an invisible stitch or a whip stitch to applique the stars in place.
- Remove the red basting stitches.
- I then stitched around each star with a blanket stitch by hand.
- Now cut the smaller, inside star just as steps 4. through 11. only using the background fabric on top of the white.
- Turn the wrong sides, cut table runners together and sew a seam around the lengths and widths of the fabric pieces leaving a one inch gap for turning right sides out.
- Use a pair of scissors or knitting needle to poke out the corners gingerly.
- Iron the table runner flat.
- Use a whip stitch to close the opening.
- Decorate your doll's table for Hanukkah further with faux latkes, sour cream and applesauce. If you have a doll sized set of Hanukkah candles these will look lovely on top of the table runner also!
