How to make a princess doll cake for your dolls...

Doll cakes crafted for American Girl Doll and
Barbie Birthday Parties

Princess doll cakes are two gifts in one! These cute confections are made to both feed a party of friends a traditional cake and ice cream treat and to also gift a special doll to the birthday girl. They are made by hollowing out the center of a baked cake to insert a doll inside before icing it's ball gown with whatever colorful sweet applications the doll wears during the birthday celebration.
Our miniature doll cake version is made for display and play time only. I've include two versions for this craft project; one for a Barbie (in lavender) and the other for an 18" doll (in hot pink).

Supply List:

  • a tiny doll for the inside of the cake (Polly Pocket or McDonalds prize doll)
  • A recycled "dome" shaped cup
  • hammer and nail or Exacto knife (needs adult assistance)
  • masking tape or fine sand paper
  • ribbon trims and flowers
  • puff paints (icing color)
  • acrylic paints
  • cardboard
  • lid for tray (optional)
  • cotton balls (optional, used on smaller Barbie doll cake example)
  • hot glue and hot glue gun
Step-by-Step Instructions:
  1. Get an adult to help cut a hole in the top of a small plastic, recycled bowl. You may do this with a hammer and nail to start and then cut away the plastic with an Exacto knife as needed. Keep enlarging the hole until your miniature doll fits snuggly inside of the inverted bowl. In the States lunch bag fruits like applesauce, mandarin oranges and fruit salads are sold in these types of containers at the super market.
  2. Hot glue the doll firmly in place.
  3. Draw around the circumference of the bowl on top of a piece of cardboard with a pencil. Cut this out and glue it to the bottom opening of the inverted bowl "skirt."
  4. Hot glue ribbon trims around the bowl "skirt." It doesn't matter what color these scraps are because they will be painted over using the color of your doll's birthday cake.
  5. Using hot pink or lavender, paint with acrylics over the entire surface of the doll's ball gown. Don't forget to also paint over her torso with this same cake icing color.
  6. Now you may paint over the raised trims using any color of icing detail you would like. I chose to use white for the example cakes shown here.
  7. Trim out the remaining designs with puff paints if you wish.
  8. I also cut a crown for the larger doll birthday cake from a piece of cardboard as well. This was then attached with hot glue.

The birthday princess cakes with trims applied.

I painted the doll cake for our American Girl Dolls hot pink.

Then I painted the raised areas with white acrylic paints and added white puff paint polka-dots.

I decided to make our Barbie Doll Birthday Cake lavender.

Her tiny ball gown is trimmed out with white lace, puff paints, ribbon and painted cotton batting.
