In most cultures, there is no clear line separating folk tales or fairy tales; all these together form the literature of preliterate societies. Fairy tales may be distinguished from other folk narratives such as legends (which generally involve belief in the veracity of the events described) and explicit moral tales, including beast fables. Most cultures whether literate or not, craft dolls that are often characters from fairy tales.

- Winnifred from "The Princess and The Pea" - was made into a modern opera "Once Upon a Mattress" and there is also a Disney version for children staring Tracy Ullman.
